Budget report seeks greater transparency

A comprehensive analysis of the 2023-24 State Budget has been tabled in parliament.
The Public Accounts and Estimates Committee (PAEC) reviewed the $86 billion financial blueprint released by the Treasurer in May.
The report contains 79 recommendations for the State Government to consider and a further three for Court Services Victoria.
They primarily relate to transparency of expenditure on services and infrastructure, and the outcomes achieved for the community, such as:
- Better performance reporting
- Reviews of significant spending or saving initiatives
- More details on spending allocations
- The release of program evaluations
The former Premier, Treasurer, government ministers and departmental representatives appeared at nine days of public hearings held throughout June 2023.
‘I would like to personally thank ministers, departmental and parliamentary officers, the Presiding Officers and court officials for their time and investment in this important process,’ Committee Chair Sarah Connolly said.
PAEC is a joint committee involving members of the government, opposition and minor parties from both houses of parliament.
The annual budget estimates inquiry scrutinises the Victorian Government’s spending and revenue raising plans.
