Committee voices support for Donor Heroes’ Night

18 May 2023

Leanne Campbell shares her 'donor hero' story about son Brett.

The Legislative Assembly's Legal and Social Issues Committee would like to acknowledge Victoria’s organ and tissue donors and their families on Donor Heroes’ Night, Thursday May 18.

Organised by Donor Families Australia, Donor Heroes’ Night is a dedicated event to celebrate, honour and commemorate those who have given the gift of life through organ and tissue donation.

The Committee is inquiring into improving organ and tissue donor registration rates in Victoria.

Australia has a high transplantation success rate and most Australians support organ and tissue donation. However, only around 36 per cent nationally and 23 per cent in Victoria are registered donors.

That’s the second lowest registration rate of all states and territories and, with around 1,800 Australians currently waitlisted for an organ transplant, the Committee is seeking to identify ways to increase the number of registered donors in Victoria.

The Committee is currently accepting written submissions to the inquiry. To request an extension to the 19 May closing date, email registereddonorsinquiry@parliament.vic.gov.au.

The terms of reference and the submissions accepted so far are available on the Committee’s website
